Momento description

My momento piece is based on my memory of my two families coming together during the holidays last year. My three materials were uncooked spaghetti, leaves, and bark. The spaghetti represents my bf's family, I used spaghetti because they are very Italian and we always have a pasta dish. It is what reminds me of them. I used leaves to represent my family. My family is very weird, but we also believe in a lot "hippie" things, ie. karma, zen, peace, meditation, dance, love, mother earth. I used the spaghetti to make a raft and used the leaves to accent it. I then placed bark on the raft and bits of pieces on it as well. The bark represents me, because like bark I have many layers to my being. I am a girlfriend, a friend, a sister, a daughter, a step mom, a pet lover, a psych student, an artist, a dancer, etc. I have a tough exterior but once you get to know me I am fun, loving, and kind. The pieces on either side are meant to symbolize the bits of my being that are added on every day. I am constantly growing! The bark is on the raft to show the support my two families give me and how the keep me up. The piece is meant to represent a uniting of two families and the support that they produce together for me, as well as each other.

Sculpture Descriptions

Sculpture 1- Determined

  • This sculpture is determined because I did layers of wood to show how there are levels you have to go through to make it to the top. Each level is slightly different, level one is one solid piece because we all start out the same. The next level is individual piece of straight wood, this signifies separation. The third level is waves, this is to show that it gets rough sometimes, but as you can see the middle piece of wood is the same and is prevailing to the top. The final level is little bits and pieces that appear to be trying to get to the top, but only the same center piece has made it. DETERMINED!
Sculpture 2- Sad
  • This sculpture is a large window with a smaller window on top of it. The smaller window also has a smaller opening to which you can see through. The glue dripping is to represent rain and the motion of falling. When I think of sad, I think of rain. Rain goes to the ground and falls from the sky. The act of falling relates to failing I suppose. The narrowing window is to represent being alone and contained. This is another thing that makes me think of sadness. SAD!
Sculpture 3- Dangerous
  • When I think of something being dangerous, I suppose I thought the same as everyone else. I imagined death traps, boobie traps, sharp objects, and fire! The bottom base of this piece is suppose to look like a worn piece of wood, like some kind of raft or drift wood. I thought that seemed dangerous. Then there are multiple spear like objects jabbed into the raft. These spears have been set on fire as well. All which seems dangerous. When I thought of dangerous I guess I imaged being on a raft trying to escape some kind of war ground like something you would see in some kind of pirate movie, and fire spears being thrown at me while trying to escape. DANGEROUS!
Sculpture 4- Old
  • For my piece I did a path of broken pieces all sightly worn, some more than others. This represents the path of life. Where things are in bits and pieces and you have to use these along the way to arrive at your older wiser self. This is represented by the memorial type pyramid of spheres. This is also burnt to show damage, and torn up at the bottom to show being worn down. But the piece is like a tomb to represent the knowledge that comes with age, and being wise. OLD!
